We are currently seeking a Library Director.

TITLE:                      Director of Colon Township Library

SUPERVISOR:          Colon Township Library Board

SUMMARY OF JOB:

Serves as the chief administrative officer of the library and is responsible for the administration of all library functions within the goals, guidelines and policies established by the Library Board.

This position is accountable for assuring and maintaining the integrity of library programs and the security of the physical premises; acting as a resource to the library patrons; selecting, organizing and securing library materials; apprising the Library Board of pertinent information critical to the decision-making process; developing and disseminating communications to the public; and providing supervision and training to support staff.

DUTIES:

*Responsible for the day-to-day administration of the library, within the framework of the

library board’s adopted policies and budget, including, but not limited to:

A.  Circulation and other services provided to the public, including statistical reporting and

proper accounting of monies collected.

B.  Collection management, including selection and withdrawal of materials, and maintaining

an accurate inventory of overall collection.

C.  Program planning for a variety of ages and interests.

D.  Providing assistance so that the public’s request for materials, information, or services

are met.

E.  Staff training and supervision so that they effectively perform their duties as described in

their job descriptions.
F.  Maintenance of communication with board, staff, patrons, community groups and general

public.

*Recommends and drafts policies for board consideration,.  Implements policies and decisions

approved by the board.

*Responsible for drafting an annual budget and presenting it to the board for approval.

Administers library budget and submits regular updates to board.

*Responsible for overall functions of the library’s physical plant; apprises library board of any

concerns related to the building or property.

*Responsible for completing all required reports, including annual State of Michigan report.

*Responsible for employing library personnel, subject to approval by board.  Provides

appropriate job descriptions for all staff.

*Serves as primary spokesperson in communicating library policies and procedure to staff and

public.

*Promotes utilization and support of the library and publicizes library services.  Informs the

board of current library and information trends.

*Acts a liaison to the Friends of the Library and other entities or individuals from which

gifts, endowments, bequests, and grants would be secured.

*Represents the library at professional meetings and community functions.

*Provides library employees with continuing education opportunities.

*Other duties as assigned by the board.

EDUCATION;

Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree strongly desired.  Minimum of 2 years of postsecondary education

required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

*Execute stairways                        *Stand for periods of up to one hour

* Lift at least 20 pounds                *Climb small stepladder

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

*Willing to travel to locations in the lower peninsula for training. (no more than 70 miles).

*Valid driver’s license

*Strong working knowledge of current technology and popular software programs.

*Must successfully complete the Beginner’s Workshop and New Director’s Workshop within

one years of hiring.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES:

Previous library experience preferred.

Additional training in management, personnel, public relations, library automation and budget

planning is high desirable.

Computer literacy in word processing, spreadsheets, networking.

Ability to speak and write effectively.

Ability to work well with staff, community leaders, professional colleagues, and general public.

Self-motivated.

Leadership ability.

Professional outlook and orientation.

Ability to set goals, organize tasks and evaluate progress.

Friendliness and good sense of humor.

Knowledge of, and willingness to keep up with, current technology and information trends.

HOURS AND COMPENSATION:

Paid personal business and vacation days.

Holidays paid if they fall on a regular work day.

Minimum 31 hours per week, paid personal business and vacation days; holidays

paid if they fall on a regular work day.

Qualifications:  Minimum two years post-secondary education required.

Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree desired.

$30,000 salaried position

Strong communication and public relation skills.

Financial and personnel management skills.

Knowledge of and experience with library automation.
