Colon Township Library
Internet/Computer Use Policy
In response to advances in technology and the changing needs of the community, and in keeping with its role as a source of information, intellectual development, and enrichment for the community, Colon Township Library provides access to computers and the Internet.
The internet, as an information resource, enables the Library to provide information beyond the confines of its own collection. It allows access to ideas, information, and commentary from around the globe. Currently, however, it is an unregulated medium. As such, while it offers access to a wealth of material that is personally, professionally, and culturally enriching to individuals of all ages, it also provides access to some material that may be inaccurate, offensive, disturbing, and/or illegal. The Colon Township Library has no control over the information accessed and cannot be held responsible for the content or quality of the information.
Registered patrons and visitors providing adequate identification may use the library’s public computers to utilize software programs and for Internet access. Users must have a signed Internet/Computer User Agreement on file at the library and must check in with a librarian before each session. Use is limited to half an hour when others are waiting; one hour maximum per day. The computers are not available for the first and last 15 minutes of the library’s daily hours.
Parents or guardians, not the library or its staff, are responsible for the Internet information selected and/or accessed by their children, and are encouraged to give their children Internet guidelines. Children under age 18 must have a permission form signed by a parent or guardian (parent/guardian must be present when signing) to access the Internet at the library. Children under age 11 must have an adult beside them to access the Internet.
Entering or participating in internet chat rooms is prohibited on library computers.
Unacceptable use of the Library’s Internet access includes, but is not limited to: use for purposes which violate U.S. or state laws; to transmit or view threatening, obscene, or harassing materials; to interfere with or disrupt users, services or equipment; or for unauthorized copying of copyright-protected material. Persons using library computers agree not to make any changes in the setup or configuration of the software or hardware, or otherwise violate system security. Misuse or abuse of library computers or Internet access will result in suspension of library computer use privileges.
Cost for printing is $.20 per page. Material of a reference nature (such as from an encyclopedia-type resource) will be provided free of charge for the first 5 pages.
